Rittma supported the Municipality of Barcelos in preparing the application for the construction of the new Barcelos WWTP, one of the largest national investments in the water sector under Portugal 2030.

The operation, submitted to the NORTE 2030 Regional Program, represents a total investment of €36.2 million, of which approximately €25.3 million are co-financed by the ERDF.

In addition to supporting the preparation and submission of the application, Rittma also prepared the Financial Viability Study (EVF), a central document for demonstrating the project’s economic and financial sustainability, in full compliance with NORTE 2030 requirements.

The new WWTP will completely replace the existing obsolete infrastructure at the end of its service life, ensuring treatment capacity for 147,777 population equivalent and incorporating state-of-the-art technology. The project includes advanced nitrification/denitrification processes, tertiary treatment with ozonation, energy efficiency measures, and in-house renewable energy production.

This is a priority investment identified in PENSAARP 2030, essential for improving the environmental quality of the Cávado River, supporting the sustainability of the textile sector, and fostering territorial development.

With this project, the Municipality of Barcelos positions itself at the forefront of sustainable water management, strengthening both the quality of life of its population and the local economic competitiveness — a commitment that Rittma is proud to support.
